Compost is a natural slow-release fertilizer and isn’t as harsh on your plants as a chemical fertilizer would be. The organic matter in compost stimulates healthy root development in plants and creates an excellent environment for soil microorganisms to do their work.
If you have areas of heavier clay type soils and then adding compost will help to improve the texture and air circulation of dense clay. The same applies to very sandy soils compost will increase the water retention of airy soils. Compost buffers the soil, neutralizing both acid & alkaline soils, balancing Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus levels bringing pH levels to an ideal range for plants to thrive.
Mushroom compost is a type of slow-release, organic plant fertilizer. Mushrooms are grown in a mixture of natural products, including straw, hay and cottonseed hulls. Mushroom compost is what remains after the mushroom is harvested, which is an environmentally friendly organic compost for the garden. Organic Soil Conditioner
Organic soil conditioners comprise of composted organics and recycled green waste.
A peat-free soil conditioner that is high in organic matter and nutrients will enrich the soil, help retain moisture and decrease plant diseases and pests.
Soil conditioners are ideal if you are looking to encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria and fungi. We recommended an organic soil conditioner spread at 50mm and dug in at a depth of 100mm.
What is the difference between a soil conditioner and a fertilizer?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions. In short, fertilizers act as food for plants, they improve the health of the plant, increase crop yields and provide essential nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous to the plant. Soil Conditioners do not add nutrients to the soil but rather they improve the texture of the soil so that the plants have a favourable environment in which to establish themselves.

Top Tip- if are wanting to save water apply your much generously. Mulch is well known for its water retention properties and ability to prevent evaporation. We recommend topping up your mulch annually and apply the mulch at least 75mm thick to achieve a true water-wise garden.
Top Tip- Large bark chips help to retain the moisture so be aware if you have areas that are prone to high water tables in winter, bark chip mulch can compound the problem by holding in excess moisture.
